The AFRINIC Fellowship program aims to create a network of African ambassadors to promote our mission and increase awareness in every country. This program offers African citizens from various backgrounds the opportunity to participate in our public policy meetings and other initiatives, thus fostering a community of potential leaders in the industry who will shape the Internet of tomorrow.
Over the past 8 years, AFRINIC has granted 230 fellows from 50 African countries the opportunity to attend our meetings across the continent. We take care of all charges and properly induct the fellows during the events, so that they can make the most out of the program. We are looking to expand these opportunities to provide more prospective individuals the chance to grow and contribute to the development of the Internet in Africa. At AFRINIC, we believe that building technical communities is key to advancing the development of the Internet in Africa. These communities play a crucial role in ensuring the stability, security, and accessibility of the Internet for all, including Network Operator Groups (NOGs) and Internet Exchange Points (IXPs). That's why we have partnered with regional and national technical community groups such as AfNOG, sdNOG, BurundiNOG, Guinee IXP, LusakaIXP, ZANOG, MIXP and others to equip them with resources that support their growth and skills development. Over the past decade, the Internet has transformed various sectors such as education, health, and public services in Africa, fueling growth and prosperity. To ensure continued growth and stability of the Internet in Africa, AFRINIC has launched the Internet Governance and ICT Development Program.
This program aims to empower stakeholders in Internet Governance, by harnessing their skills and experiences to enable their active participation in global Internet governance discussions. AFRINIC has supported various national and regional Internet Governance Forums and other Internet-related initiatives, fostering open and inclusive dialogue between stakeholders. In the past 10 years, AFRINIC has participated significantly in more than 40 Internet Governance events on the continent where we conducted workshops and shared the AFRINIC Governance and IP distributions models. AFRINIC works closely with educational institutions to conduct technical and policy-based research in Africa. Our aim is to support research that empowers network operators and end-users to make informed decisions and tackle the unique challenges in the African Internet landscape.
Through our Research and Education Program, we sponsor impactful projects and provide skills development and strategic partnerships to support communities in the research and education field in Africa. One such collaboration is with the University of Cape Town, South Africa on the ARDA (African Route-Collector Data Analyzer) Project that has been implemented in partnership with ISOC and AF-IX. The AFRINIC Critical Infrastructure Development Program is dedicated to expanding essential Internet infrastructure in Africa. This program provides financial assistance and technical expertise to design and implement vital Internet infrastructure, such as Internet exchange points (IXPs), domain name systems (DNS), and any other critical infrastructure. Through this initiative, we aim to establish a more accessible, dependable, and secure Internet for all Africans, and promote the region's sustainable digital development. We have supported the MIXP, Guinée-IXP, RINEX, and CIVIX among others. Despite the rapid growth of Internet usage in Africa, there is still a significant underrepresented group in ICT initiatives. We recognize the importance of addressing this issue and have taken action by implementing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 9, that calls for gender equality and the use of enabling technologies, particularly ICTs, to promote the empowerment of underrepresented groups.
Our Diversity Program aims to bridge the digital divide and leverage the potential of every individual to access, use, and develop Internet technologies. By promoting diversity and inclusion, we can create a more equitable and prosperous society for all. AFRINIC has partnered with some organizations such as RIFEN, Halley Movement and others.
